I’d love to take you on a journey through the Whole Wellness Method, blending it with the transformative concept of decolonising your home. Ready to dive in? Let’s go!

First, let’s look at what I mean by colonialism. It’s still very much alive today. It is when you feel standards of conduct are enforced to control people under the guise of being “better” or more “civilised.” At its core, colonialism divides, controls, and exploits.

So, what about decolonisation? Decolonise seeks to unite, liberate, and nurture. Decolonisation occurs when standards of conduct are relaxed or disregarded to empower and nurture people, being more accommodating or compassionate.

In a world where colonial influences continue to shape our spaces, the journey to decolonise your home is about more than just physical changes; it’s about nurturing an environment that supports holistic well-being and honours your true self. My “Whole Wellness Method” provides a comprehensive framework for this transformation, guiding you through 12 essential areas to create a home that fosters unity, liberation, and your soul’s nourishment.

1. Guidance: Your Inner Compass

Imagine the wisdom within you, that deep, ancient part of your soul guiding you like an internal compass. It’s pre-verbal, a force beyond words. How do you communicate with it? Try journaling, finger painting, crafting, visualisations, mirror work, dancing, playing, exploring; whatever makes you feel connected.

Decolonising your home starts here, by listening to that inner guidance. It’s about reclaiming your intuition and letting it nurture and protect you. So, go ahead and jot down what it means to you to be connected and true to yourself. Be gentle. Be you.

2. Belief: Know Your Worth

Your value isn’t tied to your achievements or contributions. You have worth simply because you exist. Embrace this belief, create your own values, and live by them. Maintain this with boundaries that have consequences. Remember, boundaries are not about controlling others but are about reserving who you are. You need to maintain focus in this distracted world.

In a decolonised home, your belief system reflects your true self, free from colonial impositions. Write down your sacred code. Let your space reflect your unwavering worth and values. Stand tall in your truth. Let people know what you stand for just by walking in your space.

3. Belonging: Create Your Own Space

We all crave belonging. It’s a deep, driving force. But guess what? You don’t need to search for it outside. Create it within. Become what you seek from others. Find your greater sense of belonging, whether it’s spiritual or just a place of comfort.

Strengthen this by leaning into your higher sense of belonging. This could show up for you as God, The Universe, Nature, Ancestors, Collective Consciousness, Inner Wisdom/Higher Self, Spiritual Guides, Love, Purpose/Calling, Cosmic Order, Philosophical Ideals.

Decolonising your home means cultivating this sense of belonging internally. Write your intentions for actions that nurture this feeling. Remember, where you belong should never evoke shame, fear, or guilt. Including your higher sense of belonging. It shouldn’t be an obligation either. It should be your sanctuary.

4. Consciousness: Be Mindful

Being conscious of what’s happening within and around you is key. Balance is everything. Don’t be ruled by one perspective. Take inventory of how things affect your mind, body, soul, and spirit. Don’t overextend yourself.

Develop a heightened awareness of how colonial structures affect your well-being. Raise your consciousness with practices like yoga, Pilates, meditation, or even martial arts. It’s about having a holistic approach. There’s no one-size-fits-all. So, take a moment for introspection. Write down what’s working for you. It’s your journey.

5. Relationships: Build Mutual Connections

Healthy relationships are open, honest, and solutions-oriented. Build relationships that are mutual and supportive, free from hierarchical constraints. They’re not about having power over or under anyone. This applies to all areas; school, work, leaders, teams, even the technology you use.

Decolonising your home involves fostering these symbiotic connections. Consider social factors like race, class, culture, and gender. Use new tools and avoid falling back into old patterns. Repetition will be important in breaking cycles. Write down why you’re committed to mutual relationships. Let your home be a place where healthy connections thrive.

6. Actualisation: Reach Your Full Potential

Balance what you love, what you’re great at, what you believe in, and what you’re valued for, to have abundant joy. Always remember, what others have is not yours to take; remove self-imposed expectations based on the life you have seen others live. Have a realistic view of who you are and what you’re working towards.

Decolonising your home means creating spaces that inspire joy and abundance. You want to wake up feeling good! Write down what you’re grateful for. Let your home be a testament to your journey towards your full potential.

7. Expressive: Embrace Your Talents

Your natural gifts and talents set you apart. Embrace them. But don’t follow a path just because you’re good at it. Find that sweet spot where you use what you love, even if it’s something you need to practice. I used to hear practice makes perfect, but as a Space Transformation Coach I now say practice makes permanence. So, if you feel called to something, try it even if you aren’t good at it.

In a decolonised home, you express your true self. Write down what you’d like to try, what you’ve always wanted to do. Your home should be a canvas for your unique talents and dreams. What hobbies can you find yourself getting lost in?

8. Presence: Show Up as Your Best Self

Be present. Not in the past, not in the future, but right here, right now. Focus on the parts of you that you’d like to cultivate. Your attention directs your energy. Be present if only for the reason that you are at your strongest when you are present. Or that joy is experienced in the present when you let go of past regrets and future anxieties.

Decolonising your home means creating spaces that encourage you to be your best self. It is mindfulness. Write down your wins, even the small ones. Be your own cheerleader. Your home should be a celebration of your presence.

joy vs fulfilment: things that bring joy

9. Lifestyle: Align with Who You Are

Every action you take is a vote for the person you want to be. Identify with who you are. Know your WHY. What steps can you take? When you consistently act in alignment with your identity, you start to embody it.

Decolonising your home means designing it to reflect your true lifestyle. Write your identity statements. For example, “I am moving towards cultural preservation by practising traditional crafts because it connects me to my heritage and brings me joy.” Your home should support the life you’re building.

10. Understanding: Know Your Environment

Understand how your environment impacts you. Sensory stimulation varies throughout the day, so create an environment that supports your best self without overstimulating you. Recognise the power of sensory experiences and design your space to engage all five senses positively. Too little, whitewashed, bland is not ideal either. Find your balance. Plants generally elevate people.

Decolonising your home means crafting a space that aligns with your internal understanding of how you respond to your environment. Track your daily actions. Notice what habits you form. Your environment should empower your willpower, not overpower it or depress you.

11. Design: Create Your True Space

Release what no longer serves you. This might mean you declutter. Surround yourself with what brings you joy and represents who you are. Your home should be a vision board of your dreams. Cleansing your home is also a good thing to consider when you want to create a shift.

In a decolonised home, the design reflects your authentic self. Write down what brings you joy. Let your space be a true reflection of your journey. Because we are not stagnant, this will be an ongoing process. Let it change with you. When you change yourself and don’t change your environment, and find yourself reaching a limit, perhaps this is the reason why. Everything you seek should be open to you.

12. Integration: Connect with Your Environment

Interact with your environment for its well-being and yours. Create spaces that encourage connection with loved ones and nature. Use natural, sustainable products where possible. This is the bigger picture, of your impact in this world. We are not here to exploit the earth.

Decolonizing your home means integrating yourself with your environment. Write about the shifts you notice when you do what’s good for your well-being and for the earth. Your home should be a harmonious blend of self and surroundings. Let us be mindful.

Be Patient With Your Journey

This is an ongoing process that I know can get overwhelming. If you ever feel overwhelmed by the process, take a moment to try this grounding exercise. It’s designed to help you reconnect with the present moment and reduce stress:

  1. 5 Things You Can See: Look around and identify five things you can see. It could be anything around you, such as a plant, a picture, or your hands.
  2. 4 Things You Can Touch: Focus on four things you can touch. It could be the texture of your clothes, the chair you’re sitting on, or even your own skin.
  3. 3 Things You Can Hear: Listen for three different sounds. This could be the hum of a computer, birds chirping outside, or the sound of your own breathing.
  4. 2 Things You Can Smell: Identify two things you can smell. Maybe it’s the scent of a candle, fresh air, or the aroma of food.
  5. 1 Thing You Can Taste: Notice one thing you can taste. It could be the lingering taste of your last meal or simply the taste of your saliva.

Take deep breaths throughout the exercise, and let it bring you back to the present moment, grounding you in your surroundings.

By following these 12 sections of the Whole Wellness Method, you can decolonise your home, creating a space that nurtures your true self and supports holistic well-being. This journey is about reclaiming your identity, honouring your heritage, and fostering a home environment that is truly yours. So, let’s embark on this journey together. Your home, your sanctuary, awaits.
